ABOUT US

Biji Kakao Trading is run by Carolina (Indonesian-born) and Dejan Borisavljevic (Indonesian at heart). The idea for the business came during a 13-hour bus ride on the never-ending Flores Highway in 2018. We asked ourselves why the 6th largest producing country of cacao in the world (according to ICCO stats) was barely known for anything but bulk cacao for the confectionery industry.

After meeting with a number of farmers, cooperatives and speciality chocolate makers across the country we couldn’t believe that the majority of what can be classified as fine and flavour cacao still ends up with local collectors/traders who pay the farmers based on the global commodities price. Seeing the potential of these ‘new’ origins, we decided to do something about it and set off to find a way to ship a selection to Europe so we could share them with speciality chocolate makers all over the world.

Biji Kakao Trading is not a commodities business. We are a peoples’ business with a passion for sustainable food and the stories behind it and we want to establish meaningful connections between Indonesian farmers and chocolate makers across the globe.

WHAT WE DO

Our mission is to support the development of an economically viable and environmentally sustainable fine and flavour cacao industry in Indonesia…

SOURCING

Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world, with well over 17,000 islands and an abundant biodiversity.

We source the best cacao from farmers and cooperatives beyond the bulk-focused growing regions with a focus on unique flavour profiles.

Through our experienced team on the ground we are able to deliver our cacao worldwide in a cost-effective manner.

DIRECT TRADE

We only purchase cacao directly from farmers and cooperatives which allows us to ensure that all of the money goes directly to them.

Further, it allows us to trace the cacao back to the source and help facilitate consistent quality levels and ongoing improvements.

INNOVATION & EDUCATION

Our cooperations with the Indonesian Coffee and Cacao Research Institute (“ICCRI”), other industry experts as well as a number of NGOs allow us to share latest research findings among growers in order to promote sustainable and efficient pre-and post-harvesting practices in order to meet our growing client demands.

In addition, we advise and support producers on storage and logistics related matters in order to protect their valuable crop.
